ACTOR ALAN LADD in 1944

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY  2011

Alan Ladd - Photograph 1944 - Gift to the Museum from Gary Fredburg 2011. (click on image to enlarge) Library of San Fernando Valley Entertainment Industry History.

This wrinkled, but otherwise good image of the North Hollywood actor, Alan Ladd was a gift to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley from Gary Fredburg at the Centennial of Van Nuys festival this last Friday. This publicity photograph was taken for Paramount Pictures in 1944. Awaiting archival preparation, the picture was not subjected to pressure, resulting in the light colors across the image.

STEEN AMBULANCE SERVICE

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY  2011

Lee Jamieson, a Board Member of the Midtown North Hollywood Neighborhood Council, is hoping
that one of you Museum Possums just might have a photograph or information about the old time
Steen Ambulance Service in the North Hollywood area.
Before the LA and Country Fire Department ambulance response services, the ambulances in the San Fernando Valley were operated by area mortuaries. (Sort of reaching folks coming or going).
Verne Steen had a mortuary in the NoHo.
Lee hopes you might give us information.
thanks
Jerry

HAVE THE RIGHT STUFF TO BE A MUSEUM DETECTIVE?

2010  THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES

How good a Museum detective would you be?  Forensic work is a big part of our Museum's work, and you just might have the nature and skills to become a volunteer investigator for the Museum Community.  Porky Johnson, our 86 year old buddy in North Hollywood challenges you to figure out
the purpose for this silver triangle piece.  It's "Good for 12 1/2 cents in trade." And was issued by or redeemable at The Brunswick in Durango Colorado.  Our Museum adviser Jerry McAlevey ought to have this one figured out quickly.  (click on images to enlarge)

Here's an antique milk can from the early days of North Hollywood. It is stamped Dairy Lane Farms. Who will tell us more about Dairy Lane Farms?  (click on the image to enlarge)

JOHN KASON - TOUGH GUY ON AND OFF THE SCREEN

2010  THE YEAR OF VALLEY ADVENTURES           Why it's called the Valley of the Stars.

During his successful career as an actor in film and television, John Kason lived in North Hollywood.
He was best known for his "heavy" roles, the all important "bad guy" that makes movies so exciting.
Kason was born in 1918 and died in an accident while on location in Santa Barbara in 1961.

RECIPIES FROM FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF NORTH HOLLYWOOD AND MORE

2010 -- The Year of Valley History
Ralph Brown - First Baptist Church of North Hollywood - Photo for the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley by Gerald Fecht - Feb. 2010 - Ralph Brown has been playing the piano since his 3rd birthday.

As I was leaving from a short talk about The Museum today at the First Baptist Church of North Hollywood, Ms. Jan Fisher presented me a copy of the 70th Anniversary Church Family Cookbook. I don’t know about you, but just reading about Dan Doggett’s “Copper Penny Salad”, Harriet Oman’s “Double Layer Pumpkin Pie” or Jan’s “Zucchini Bread and Butter Pickes” make me think that maybe we should have just a culinary museum.
If the recipes weren’t enough, on pages 2 and 3, there are highlights of the church’s history.
The First Baptist Church of North Hollywood began as a “mission” church fostered by the First Baptist Church of Van Nuys. The fledging church held its first services in a store front location on Burbank Boulevard. 49 charter members of the church were led by the Mr. Howard Bigelow. As it grew the church moved to Duncan Hall on Magnolia Boulevard and from there in the famous El Portal Theater on Lankershim Boulevard. In 1929, the Rev. William Riddle became the pastor of the newly incorporated denomination.
At the height of the Great Depression, the First Baptist Church of North Hollywood purchased its first property at the corner of Otesego and Fair Streets.
In 1964 an ever growing congregation rejoiced with a handsome new sanctuary. Education buildings, offices, a fireside room and other additions came along. The Museum of the San Fernando Valley always tries to include the First Baptist Church of North Hollywood in our walking tours. Its unique architecture and the warmth of its pastor Rev. Mike Woodcock and welcoming congregation make the church an important San Fernando Valley landmark.

2009 - The Year of Valley History
The Director of tours for The Museum of the San Fernando Valley, Richard Hilton arranged for a special addition to the walking adventure on February 7th. Undaunted adventurers who defied a day of rainstorms got to meet the Rev. Doctor Michael Woodcock, who lead our Valley in-tourists on a personal tour of the interior of the First Baptist Church of North Hollywood.
Here Rev Woodcock is silhouetted against the great window at the front of the church erected in 1925.
