Rodrigo Beas Facultad de Ciencias Marinas Universidad Autónoma de Baja California
Is a marine ecologist and Professor at the Facultad de Ciencias Marinas, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC), where he leads research on the resilience of coastal ecosystems under climate change, with a particular focus on kelp forests. He initiated the MexCal Lab, a long-term ecological monitoring program spanning the Baja California peninsula, and collaborates closely with fishing cooperatives, NGOs, and government agencies to advance restoration and sustainable management of marine resources.
His work integrates field-based ecological monitoring, scientific diving, environmental sensor networks, and data-driven approaches to understand ecosystem dynamics and inform conservation strategies. He has contributed to peer-reviewed research on kelp forest resilience, marine heatwaves, and nature-based solutions and actively works to translate scientific knowledge into accessible tools for communities, decision-makers, and the broader public.
Beas-Luna’s academic path has been shaped by a strong connection to the ocean through both research and practice, combining long-term ecological datasets with local ecological knowledge to address complex socio-ecological challenges. His current efforts focus on scaling restoration strategies, strengthening collaborative monitoring networks, and building bridges between science, policy, and coastal communities.
He holds advanced degrees in marine science and is affiliated with national and international research networks dedicated to ocean conservation. His work has been featured in academic publications and public outreach initiatives, and he regularly participates in collaborative efforts aimed at improving the stewardship of marine ecosystems in Mexico and beyond.
