"coffee consumption was inversely associated with total and cause-specific mortality. Whether this was a causal or associational finding cannot be determined from our data."In other words coffee is good for you. They can't seem to pin it down but people who drink coffee are less likely to die from a wide variety of issues.

Association of Coffee Drinking with Total and Cause-Specific Mortality
It's been awhile since I've posted about coffee but this study is too good to pass up. The conclusion of Association of Coffee Drinking with Total and Cause-Specific Mortality by the New England Journal of Medicine states:

Brew, Not Buy Your Own Tea
Not that this should come to a shock to anyone but researches have found that brewed tea is much healthier than the bottled variety. Mostly due to the fact that home brewed teas have up to 20 times the polyphenols, antioxidants which are believed to fight cancer, than the store bought kind. Plus, a cup of tea at home will cost you about 10 cents for the tea bag and water while a bottle of tea will run you over $1.

Strengthen Your Teeth with Green Tea
Looks like drinking green tea can help keep your teeth well into your old age. Researchers think that it has to do with some anti-bacterial elements in green tea. However drinking tea with sugar negates any benefits.

Caffeine Addicts Really Need that Morning Cup of Joe
Apparently caffeine addicts really need that morning coffee just to get back to their base level of alertness. Coffee addicts still feel more awake after their morning coffee but it's just a reversal of the effects of caffeine withdrawal. People who are mere mild abusers of the bean, philistines, get a jolt of awakeness from their morning brew.

Is Coffee Healthy?
Recently, local Ottawa blogger, DaniGirl posed a question on her site about coffee overload. When is too much coffee really too much coffee? Well coffee might just be healthier than we think.

Friday Book Review: Born to Run

This is an entertaining book on a number of levels. Gluing the book together is a narrative about a fifty-mile race through the Mexico’s Copper Canyons pitting a native tribe of super runners against an odd collection of Americans.
Interspersed along the book are sections about the genesis of jogging and ultra-marathons; back ground on the athletic shoe industry and reasons why your $150 Nike's are probably bad for your feet; and the The Running Man theory of evolution.
Anthropologists have used The Running Man theory to describe why humans evolved into bipedal runners. Most mammals are the four legged variety which is much better suited towards speed running. Since most animals are faster than humans we evolved the physiology to maintain long, slow distance running. Getting up onto two legs allows us to get more oxygen in our lungs which in turn allows us to run for longer distances. We used this as a hunting strategy to, basically, run our prey to death.
I found Born to Run to be a fascinating and entertaining book. One which I would recommend you to buy. Since reading the book I've taken up jogging again. I don't expect to be doing any 50 mile ultra-marathons anytime soon though.

Coffee Wil Not Sober You Up
Apparently using coffee to sober up once intoxicated is a myth. In fact the combination of caffeine and alcohol impairs your decision making abilities even worse than alcohol alone. So if you are out and you've been drinking. You don't need a coffee, you need a cab.

Caffeine and Headaches
A Norwegian study links caffeine consumption to causing and curing headaches. To much and you'll get an occasional headache. Too little and you run a greater risk of chronic headaches. My own personal sweet spots seems to be two cups of coffee a day with an unlimited amount of tea on the side.

Starbucks to Revamp Menu
Starbucks is changing their food menu starting June 30th. They will be removing all the high fructose corn syrup and preservatives from their food which can only be a good thing. Not that I eat at Starbucks often but it's good to know that the occasional brownie won't be laced with HFCS.
