Este diagrama ilustra los efectos metabólicos del glucagón y la insulina.
Los niveles de glucosa en sangre influyen en la secreción de insulina y glucagón. La deficiencia de insulina conduce a un aumento de la lipólisis, un aumento de la proteólisis y una disminución de la utilización de la glucosa, mientras que el exceso de glucagón conduce a una disminución de la síntesis de glucógeno, un aumento de la cetogénesis, un aumento de la glucogenólisis y una gluconeogénesis.
