Description
English: Cold shield for heat insulation of the superconducting coils of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator experiment, on display at the Max Planck institute of Plasma Physics in Greifswald. Such a cold shield is mounted on the plasma vessel to minimize heat radiation to the superconducting coils at -203°C (70K). This cold shield consists of a crumpled, multi-layer aluminum-coated plastic film covered with shields made of glass fibre reinforced plastic. The plastic shields conduct the heat through the laminated copper grids. The manufacturing process for the heat-conducting composite material was jointly patented by the manufacturing company MAN Diesel & Turbo SE and the IPP.
