Alexandra von Nahmen to head Programs for Europe, Turkey & Russia

The new Main department brings together the former Russia, Ukraine and Eastern Europe Main department, Programs for Europe, and the Turkish Service under a single management structure.
The reorganization is part of the "Connect Europe" project that strengthens cooperation at DW across its European services and editorial teams. The initiative aims to deepen cooperation among language services, leverage synergies and to ensure the future viability of DW offerings across Central and Eastern Europe, Turkey, Russia and Central Asia.
Alexandra von Nahmen brings with her extensive experience as a DW correspondent. She previously reported for DW from Washington, D.C., and headed the DW studios in Moscow and Brussels. Her work as a journalist focuses on security policy, transatlantic relations, as well as on reporting from conflict and war zones, particularly Ukraine. Since October 2025, she served as Director of the Russia, Ukraine and Eastern Europe department.
Nadja Scholz, DW Managing Director Programming: "I am delighted that Alexandra von Nahmen is taking on this important role. She is an outstanding journalist and a thoughtful manager with a strong strategic mindset. Her ability to foster collaboration across teams and locations will play a key role in shaping and building the new Main department."
The new Europe, Turkey and Russia Main department will promote cross-language and cross-border collaboration in the planning, production, and distribution of content, while further developing shared journalistic formats.
Alexandra von Nahmen: "We want to reinforce our reporting from and for Europe. With the war in Ukraine and other geopolitical challenges, this is more important today than at any time since the end of the Cold War. We are embracing innovation and new technologies to support our reporters, who often work under extremely difficult conditions. Their work ensures that everyone, wherever DW is present, has access to independent, reliable information."
