The reason I'm asking is because the [[Hattie McDaniel]] page, says: "In 1908, she entered a contest sponsored by the Women's Christian Temperance Union, reciting "Convict Joe", later claiming she had won first place." This is referenced to Icons of Black America (plus another link which doesn't seem to lead anywhere). If I Google it, there are websites which state that she did win this prize (ie https://collections.new.oscars.org/Details/Archive/70043581). I'd like to know if there is a story behind this so-called "claim" to have won a contest - it's an odd way of describing it, if she did in fact win. If anyone can access this, and find something about Hattie McDaniel reading this poem, I would be very appreciative.
