Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome, PCHS-NJROTC! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies
|
Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Movie theater shooting article
[edit]Let me commend you......what a great effort!! Please stick around!! The learning curve here can be kind of twitchy, but stick with it, OK? Please don't run away permanently!! --Bddpaux (talk) 20:19, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- You made two VERY HEFTY edits......good work!! Much better than my first try!! Bddpaux (talk) 20:24, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the praise! I've been active with wikis since 2007, with a presence at Wikipedia, Conservapedia, Rational-Wiki, Wiktionary, and Mafia Wars Wiki, so that's part of it. I do look forward to further contributions here. PCHS-NJROTC (talk) 20:36, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Glad to hear it, especially since (with all that experience) one can assume that you understand the choreography of things-wiki. Please remember:this wiki is a NEWS SOURCE. As such, there is editorial oversight. To be less polite: This ain't Wikipedia. Nearly everyone here is involved at that project, but one must quickly learn the differnces (both the overt ones and the subtle ones as well) between the two places. Keep at it!!! Want my advice....just pop into the Newsroom every now and again, and do a little plain old copyediting on some articles being developed....fix a typo here.....drop in a comma there. That technique will carry you a long way here! --76.6.78.207 (talk) 21:02, 24 July 2012 (UTC)Bddpaux (talk) 21:03, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- I see there are significant differences, and to be honest, no two wikis are alike with their policies. Just like how Conservapedia and Rational-Wiki are almost polar opposites, and Wikipedia is somewhere in the middle, but much different than either one of the others. When I formed the article about the Colorado shootings, I examined the source code for a couple other pages and basically mimicked the style for my article. In regards to what to write on, should subjects be of international importance, national importance, regional importance, or just local importance? PCHS-NJROTC (talk) 21:17, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hi. Just to drop in a remark here. Our audience is global, so the significance of each article needs to be explained for an international audience; but not every article has to be of great interest to every potential reader. Our criteria for newsworthiness do not prohibit relatively local articles... depending. See WN:Newsworthiness (which essay is about what we modernly call "relevance", one component of newsworthiness). --Pi zero (talk) 21:27, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
