By 1899 the railway owned by the "Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis" company was running through the village, and there was a depot there. In addition, there was a gin, grist and saw mill, as well as a blacksmith shop and four stores. The train ran from ca. 1897 to 1929 when it was discontinued due to financial problems of the company. The old depot still stands in its original location on the "Old Railroad Bed Road."

The Toney Volunteer Fire Department and the Madison County Sheriff's Department provide fire and police services in the Toney area [1][2].
