The European University (EU) is a multi-campus business school, established in 1973 in Antwerp by Xavier Nieberding and in 1982 in Brussels by Dean Dominique Jozeau, with headquarters in Switzerland. It operates campuses in Switzerland (Geneva and Montreux), Spain (Barcelona), and Germany (Munich), with an executive facility in Yvorne, Switzerland.

The current president of the school is Dirk Craen, who is also UNESCO Chair in International Relations, Business Administration and Entrepreneurship.[2]

Programs

EU offers English-language business education programs. It classifies these programs at undergraduate and graduate level; such as bachelor, master and doctoral degree programs in business administration (BBA, MBA and DBA). The university also offers majors in several fields of management education such as communication and public relations, information systems management, wealth management, finance banking and corporate finance.

The European University also offers dual degree programs with two U.S. institutions: Nichols College in Massachusetts,[3][4] and College of Charleston in South Carolina.[5]

Accreditation status

Business programs at four campuses in Europe (Barcelona, Geneva, Montreux and Munich) have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) since 2009.[6] ACBSP extends accreditation only to specified programs; it does not accredit whole institutions or whole campuses.[6] The business programs at the Swiss campuses have been accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education since March 2010.[7][8] In January 2011, the Spain, Switzerland and Germany campuses received International Quality Accreditation from the Central and East European Management Development Association (CEEMAN).[9]

Before the ACBSP accreditation process was completed, the institution's accreditation status drew negative attention from international news media and government officials. A Singapore newspaper reported in 2008 that a branch of the Swiss Embassy in Singapore had issued information stating that European University lacked educational accreditation in its home jurisdiction of Switzerland, where the Centre of Accreditation and Quality Assurance of the Swiss Universities has responsibility for accreditation.[10] From 1993 to 2007, the European University in Barcelona had authorization from Catalonian authorities to offer programs leading to Bachelor and Master of Business Administration degrees, but this authorization was withdrawn in 2007 due to the institution's lack of official recognition in Switzerland.[11] In August 2009, the Malaysian newspaper The Star included European University in a list of "dubious" institutions which were not in recognised accreditation registries.[12] It is speculated that European University will need to change its name in 2015, when a new Swiss law takes effect that prohibits institutions lacking Swiss accreditation from calling themselves "university".[13]

In the German database Anabin operated by The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany, EU (Spain) has the status of H-. This category indicates that the school lacks accreditation in its country of origin and/or the school is not recognized as an institution of higher education in Germany.[14]

Rankings

European University's Spain campus was ranked at 52 out of 67 European business schools in the 2010 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings.[15] It tied for last in QS's 2010 ranking of finance programs.[16] In the 2011 QS Report, the European University's Spain, Switzerland, and Germany campuses were ranked at 39.[17] The 2013/2014 QS Report, ranked the EU campuses from Spain, Switzerland, and Germany at 34.[18]

Honorary degrees

A July 2013 online article in the Swiss weekly newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag criticized European University for being generous in awarding honorary doctoral degrees to well-known people.[13]
