Marharyta Aljakandrauna Fjafilawa (Born 31 May 1997) is a Belarusian pool player from Minsk. Fjafilawa has won 17 Belarussian championships, and in 2015 won the European Championship. In 2017 Fjafilawa became the number one ranked player on the Euro Tour for the first time after two tournament victories.

Career

Singles

Marharyta Fjafilawa saw her first success in 2011 when she played in her first national 8-Ball competition where she won the bronze medal, reaching the semi-finals.[1] The following year, she won her first national championship title in the Junior Women's Championships in 9-Ball and first participated in the European Youth Championships 10-Ball reaching the quarter-finals.[1] In October she won the final against Jana Schut to win the Belorussian 8-Ball championship.[1] The following season she succeeded in both competitions of the national ladies championships. In the 8-ball final she defeated Anastassija Tumilowitsch 4–1 and in 9-ball she won 5–0 against Natallja Koslouskaja.[1]

In early 2013, victories followed in the Belarusian Under-18 Championship and the Belorussian 9-Ball Cup. Later that season she gained victory in the Baltic Pool League held in Tartu and in the final against Agnė Jarušauskaitė won 7–4.[1] Shortly after, she also won the 10-ball national championship. In the Youth Championship 2013 Fjafilawa twice reached the quarter-finals. In September, Fjafilawa defeated Simona Milišauskaitė to win her second Baltic Pool League victory in Riga.[1]

In March 2014 Fjafilawa became Belarussian Under-18 champion in the disciplines 8-Ball and 9-Ball.[1] Fjafilawa played in the 2014 European Pool Championship, entering the main women's 9-ball competition, lost 6–7 to defending champion Jasmin Ouschan 8–7.[1] She also entered the juniors events, reaching the semi-final of the eight-ball event, and reached the final of the nine-ball event, losing 3–6 to Kamila Khodjaeva.[1]

In April 2015, Fjafilawa won the first medal for Belarus at the European Championships. After defeating Louise Furberg and Kristina Tkatsch, she reached the semi-final of straight pool losing to Ouschan 36–75.[2] 2016 saw Fjafilawa win her third victory at the Baltic Pool League, winning 6–2 in her hometown Minsk the final against the Ukrainian Daryna Sirantschuk.[1] Fjafilawa won her first medal at Euro Tour events at the 2016 North Cyprus Open reaching the final before losing 3–7 against Kristina Tkatsch.[3] The following season, she won her first event on tour, winning the final of the 2017 Dutch Open, defeating Oliwia Czupryńska 7–2.[4] Later that season, she won her second event, winning the Braga open, defeating Katarzyna Wesołowska 7–4 in the final.[5] The next two seasons saw Fjafilawa reach the final of both the 2018 and 2019 Austria Open events. She would play Jasmine Ouschan in the final of both events, but lost both, losing 7–2 and 7–1 respectively.[6]

Fjafilawa competed for the junior national team, at both the European Youth Championships 2014 and 2015 with which she won the bronze medal in 2014.[7]

Personal life

In 2015, Marharyta Fjafilawa and Jana Schut became the first billiards players in Belarus to receive state funding.[10][11]
