This Hungarian archdiocese is a unique one in the sense that it represents two cities, Esztergom and Budapest. The two being one diocese is because in Hungary's early history Esztergom was the capitol of the country. Its name from Archdiocese of Esztergom was changed on 31 May 1993. The diocese was founded in the 10th century. Its current archbishop is dr. Péter Cardinal Erdő. He received this position after the retirement of dr. László Cardinal Paskai.
