Melania Fogelbaum (1911-1944) was a poet and painter.[1] She was born in Łódź, Poland, to Cyla Fogelbaum (1874-1942).

During Nazi occupation

In 1940 Melania and her mother were forced into the Łódź ghetto where Cyla died on February 25, 1942. Melania, however, served as a cultural and spiritual and leader to youth in the ghetto.[2] They gathered in her attic where they listened to music and recited poems under Melania"s guidance.

Murdered by the Nazis

Melania became afflicted with tuberculosis and was unable to meet the gruesome work benchmarks enforced by the Nazis. Other prisoners, however, shared their own rations with her for more than two years.[3] On August 1, 1944 Melania was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau where she was killed soon after.[3]
