A binary blob, in computer sciences is a binary object for which their is no source code available. With operating systems like Ubuntu and OpenBSD, this usually refers to partial or complete drivers provided by companies such as ATI and NVIDIA to provide support for their devices under these systems. Such blobs are an issue of conflict with open source software and free software advocates and regular users of these operating systems, since a binary blob can provide convenient support for hardware at the cost of the ability to see and modify the entire operating system.
