Summary

Description

English: High speed photography in a dark room using an acoustic flash trigger, exposure time 1/10000s, picture taken in 1990, negative scanned in 2006, edited version.

Hinnerk Rümenapf https://hinnerk.ruemenapf.de/ This photo was used in the article "Sekt, Champagner & Co." (Chemie Unserer Zeit, 2009, 43, 418 – 432; Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) and also in the book "Chemische Köstlichkeiten" by Klaus Roth (Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA; 2010; ISBN 978-3527327522, S. 47) to show the thermodynamic processes that occur when opening a bottle of sparkling wine. See also: http://hinnerk.ruemenapf.de/fotos/plopp/

The pressure drop when opening the bottle causes a temperature drop that is big enough to freeze the humidity of the air to a smoke of tiny ice crystals (according to Prof. Roth).
