I just indexed a repository via co-pilot- I now know i can only index 5 repositories as part of my plan. I wish to remove the index that I just added. I cannot find instructions or place in which to remove this index restoring my index count back to 5.

Hey, guys. Looking for an answer to the same question.
Indexed some repositories and I would like to remove the indexing and using it for others, so that I can use Copilot to check some files.
I don't have any option regarding indexed repository, repository management or similar, in the copilot settings page.
Can someone indicate if the above reply worked for them?

I received this response from GitHub Support:

'I'm afraid we don't currently offer the option to un-index repositories. I'm going to send your feedback to the team, and I'll keep you posted on any updates!'

Had I known this, I would not have purchased the product.

That is... quite something. That has to be a feature. You get 5 repositories indexed... ever? They cannot be changed? This just doesn't make any sense.

It’s frustrating that Copilot Individual and Business accounts are capped at 5 and 50 repo indexes for life, while only Enterprise accounts get unlimited indexing. On top of that, there’s no way to delete or manage what’s already been indexed once you hit the limit. No warnings either.

Suggestion:

1. Let Individual and Business users delete old repo indexes once they hit their limit.
2. Set a reasonable monthly cap on how many new repos can be indexed after deletions to prevent abuse.
   For example, after hitting the limit, allow up to 2 new indexes per month once old ones are deleted.

A rough idea: Star count could be used as one of the criteria to prevent abuse.
For repositories with more Stars, the criteria for indexing could be relaxed, as these are more likely to be reused by others.

I am just thinking that... if I fork a public repo, make some changes and index the new repo. after asking questions on copilot i delete the new repo, would that still be counted as one indexed repo?

I did exactly this; forked, indexed, then deleted. After a few days, I am still at 4 repos left that I can index.

Support told me that if a repo is deleted, it will remove the index, but the UI is not ready to reflect the number of available indexes.
Perhaps someone that already has 5 could do a test of deleting a repository and trying to index a new one.

I had the same repository open in 2 tabs and accidently clicked index for both, 2 of the 5 total indexes were used

I could understand if they made the limits reset each month, or if you could un-index repos, but permanently??????????????????????????

Support answered my question.
It is only possible to remove a repository from the Copilot index if you delete the repository. Furthermore, it will not reflect (decrease) the number of available indexes in the UI.

This is a pretty bad design choice. 5 indexes for life is a crazy limit considering that the warning is hidden somewhere in a separate page.

I accidentally indexed a repository not realizing it was a limited quantity for my entire organization. Please add the feature to remove a repository from the index feature.

This is extremely poor UI/UX design, there's a huge green button with a CTA to index a repo
...that doesn't even warn that its not possible to get the credits back

You can also index a repository twice just happened to me,I clicked on the index button nothing happened, reloaded the page, clicked on it again because there was no feedback and now I can only index 3 more even though I have only indexed one, very bad UI/UX design and very unfriendly for users.

I clicked the button 3 times because nothing happened in the UI and it consumed 3 out of my 5 usages and now there is no way to unindex and get usages back.

I wasted 30 minutes clicking everything just trying to find out how to remove stuff from the index, because i expected this to be a standard feature until i found this discussion thread. What a horrible feature design.

I have no idea and cannot explain how this even got into the preview stage and released to the public. Someone must take either more drugs or less drugs, the current level is definitely not good.

This is undeniably atrociously poor implementation. There's a big green button that encourages you to index the repo. There is no indication there that you cannot undo that. I indexed someone else's repo and obviously there's no way for me to delete it.

yea there's also a cta to do it and no confirmation popup for something you can only do 5 times on a single account
