Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll try to get a fix out in the next day or so.

This should now be fixed via 9afdbe3.

There were some things that I liked about next-themes, and I'm sure it's possible to get it working, but I don't have the capacity to debug it right now.

So I just reverted to using the old dark mode support, which has been tested quite a bit in production.
