We have been able to invest a bit of work into the GITTA platform and are pleased to inform you about new content:

- the following 4 lessons are now available in English:
- "SPATIAL QUERIES" (basic level)
- "CONTINUOUS SPATIAL VARIABLES" (basic level, online since April)
- "ACCESSIBILITY" (basic level, online since April)
- "General introduction to the GITTA case studies"

- the lesson "TERRAIN ANALYSIS" on intermediate level is accessible again

- a NEW CASE STUDY is online, the "Mountain goats and bighorn sheep in Yellowstone National Park" (online since March)

- and we published a summary of the results of our user survey (which was realized in 2010)

Since 2000, the Dutton Institute has been developing and offering award-winning online programs across undergraduate and graduate levels in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Currently the Institute includes over 50 personnel worldwide. E-Education is a major strategic College and University priority. The Director candidate should present a record of effective leadership and accomplishments in the identification, development, and operation of high quality online programs. Experience leading curricular design and development as well as program administration and delivery that meets market opportunities is crucial. The candidate should have the knowledge and vision to work across the College's disciplines and should possess background and research skills in distance education. This position is located in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and is coordinated with the university's World Campus. A master's degree or higher is required. Strong strategic development skills, communication capacity, and business acumen are imperative. Lab an der ETH Zürich, beleuchtet die Forschungsarbeit von Doktorierenden
für die Walt Disney Company; Prof. Dr. Rolf Schulmeister, Zentrum für
Hochschul- und Weiterbildung an der Universität Hamburg, betrachtet die
Veränderung der Hochschulen in Europa und den USA unter dem curricularen

The spatial processes affecting the sustainable development of our living
environment are of a supra-national and even a global scale. Geo-ICT plays
an increasing role in the management of these processes. We also see the
development of global delivery networks for Geo-ICT products and services.
Partners in these chains must have a common understanding of the
specifications and conditions for product and service delivery.

Young people in particular should be stimulated to choose for a professional
career in this field. They should form part of an international professional
community ready to engage and collaborate with their highly qualified and
experienced colleagues for life-long learning.

International partnerships and consortia for cross border education provide
a new setting for the education in this context. Web-based education and
distance learning approaches and e-delivery of educational services are
developing very fast. Partnerships for developing of international curricula
require the possibility of the transfer of credit points between educational
institutions.

1. Licenses for ESRI ArcGIS 9.3.1

To users of GITTA, ESRI offers one-year licenses for students and 60-day 
evaulation licenses for non-educational purposes of ArcGIS. The 
application forms for the licenses have been updated to the current 
version of ArcGIS, 9.3.1, and can be downloaded from the GITTA website.


2. EUGISES 2010

Please find attached the Call for Papers for the EUGISES 2010 conference 
(Seventh European GIS Education Seminar). It will take place in Serres, 
Greece from September 9-12.

GITTA WINS MEDIDA PRIX 2008

GITTA IS NOW OPERATED BY "GITTA ASSOCIATION"

At the end of July 2008, funding by the Swiss Virtual Campus (SVC) has run
out, as the SVC Program as a whole came to an end. Since then, GITTA is now
operated by the GITTA Association, which was originally founded in November
2006 (see previous newsletters). The GITTA Association is open to all who
are interested in supporting the advancement of GITTA and CartouCHe.

GITTA HAS NEW COORDINATOR
-------------------------
As of 1 September 2008, GITTA has a new coordinator, Patrick Lüscher.
Patrick is a PhD student at the Department of Geography, University of
Zurich, specializing in Geographic Information Science and cartographic
pattern recognition.
Our former coordinator, Thomas Grossmann, has moved to a new position as a
research assistant at the Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems at ETH Zurich.
Many thanks to Thomas for the great work he has put into the project!

Dear GITTA newsletter subscriber,

Following the foundation of the GITTA promotion association in November 
2006, we are happy to inform you that the SVC (Swiss Virtual Campus 
program) granted us with additional funding until July 2008 for a second 
maintenance phase, which we have just started. The funds will be mainly 
used to pay the project coordinator, continue the maintenance of GITTA 
content, develop extensions/translations, and develop liaisons to 
related projects.

Thomas Grossmann was hired as the new project coordinator in succession 
of Joël Fisler, our long-time project coordinator who has moved the the 
Multimedia and eLearning Services (MELS) group of the University of 
Zurich. Thomas started his term on March 1st 2007. Many warm thanks to 
Joël for his great services to the project.

At the last meeting of the steering committee of the GITTA Association 
on March 29th, it was decided to hold the first meeting of the 
Association in late May 2007 (exact date follows). In this sense, we are 
very pleased to welcome new members to the Assocation.

There are different options to apply for membership:

- active membership: if you plan to help updating, maintaining or even 
extending the GITTA contents
- sponsor membership: if you would like to support our association by 
your spirit and some money

For each of these categories you can apply as individual or collective 
member (companies or institutes).

If you are interested in any kind of membership in the GITTA 
Association, please contact the project coordinator Thomas Grossmann 
(coo...@gi...). You can find additional information about the

those of you who decide to be sponsoring members, we could offer for

Both categories offer individual and collective (for companies, =20

subscription form to our website in late January 2007 after the first =20=

We are pleased to announce a further step towards an open E-Learning-=20
project GITTA:

The meeting will be held as follows:

- Place: Department of Geography of the University of Berne =20
(Switzerland), Hallerstrasse 12, 3012 Bern, Room 302

The e-learning project GITTA (Geographic Information Technology =20
Training Alliance) develops e-learning lessons about Geographic =20
Information Systems (GIS) since 2001. In February 2006 we opened the =20
project to the public and released our lessons under the Creative =20
Commons license freely for non-commercial purposes. Now we continue =20
our "opening strategy" and change the legal form: The existing =20
consortium of ten partner institutes will be dissolved and a new =20
"GITTA association", accessible to every interested person or =20
organisation, will be established. We would like to invite interested =20=

circles to take part in the future growth of the GITTA project both =20
w.r.t. content and quality.

The to be founded GITTA association will be open to interested =20
persons and organisations and allow them to become an active member =20
or a sustaining member (individual or organisation). Sustaining =20
memberships are directed to persons and organisations, who are using =20
GITTA and/or would like to support the purpose of GITTA.

3. Intermediate lessons:
Meanwhile the GITTA team is working on the release of the
intermediate lessons and the missing basic lessons. We plan to have
them ready at the end of June and present them at the AGIT in Salzburg.

4. Technical News:
eLML (eLesson Markup Language), the XML Framework behind GITTA, has
completely updated the website and released version 3.0. The latest
release offers easier installation procedures and more customizable

Dear subscribers of the GITTA-News mailinglist,
This list has been created some months ago and I would like to send a 
first Newsletter about whats happening in the GITTA project.

We are currently in the process of updating all our lessons to become 
"eLML compatible" according to the latest eLML 2 release (see below). 
The other big issue before going "Open Content" is to get permission 
from authors, publishers, editors etc. to use their illustrations, 
pictures etc. that we integrated in some GITTA lessons. When these 
issues have been solved, the first GITTA lessons will be available free 
under the Creative Commons license. We plan the release in late 2005 and 
will inform you through this newsletter.

GITTA has been presented in June at the ISPRS workshop and the DDGI 
Fachtagung in Potsdam (Germany) and in July at the conference XII 
International Cartographic Conference (ICC 2005) in A Coruña (Spain). If

A lot of work is also put in the development of eLML, the eLesson Markup 
Language. This open source XML framework is the technical "backbone" of 
our GITTA lessons and is also available free under the open source GPL 
license. Release 2.01 has just been published and if you would like to 
know more about eLML, please have look at http://www.elml.ch. We also 
offer a very low traffic eLML-News list and a second mailinglist for 
eLML users. You can subscribe or have a look at the archives of these

Next week the GITTA coordinator will be present at the DeLFI/GMW 2005
