Hi there, I have a UCAC4 CD. I currently have it installed in my C drive root directory. How would I link it to HNSKY or would have to copy the u4index.unf and the Zxxx files to HNSKY root directory. Also what would I have to type in the search box to locate a binary star. Take care.
Thanks. Will give it a try. Take care.
Hi Kennith, Yes you can make/draw a horizon profile by lines and circles. There is an example supplement included. See attached. Some people have used there telescope to measured their horizon. You can draw lines based on azimuth, altitude using the popup menu. cs, Han
Does HNSKY allow you to have a horizon profile like Cartes du Ciel or Stellarium. Take care.
Yes use the menu Screen, Animation ctrl+R. First search for the comet. E.g. in the search menu by typing Lemmon and press comets. Then select it. Then select menu Animation Select planetary tracks. Select your time period.
That worked. Thank you so much for the quick fix! On the subject of comets, is there a way to plot the path of the comet, perhaps with hourly or daily tick marks? I am trying to see when it might be near other interesting objects in the sky.
Ctrl+3 or Ctrl+4 are no longer in use. The comet and asteroid editor where removed since nobody was using it. The manual requires and update but that is outstanding. The update with the fix you can download from here: http://www.hnsky.org/software.htm
Hi Philip, The problem was caused by a small change in the MPC file format. The line where one byte shorter then previously. I have adapted the HNSKY routine and released an update HNSKY 4.3.2e. Download and install it. Tell me if this works for you. I have update the Windows and Linux version. cs, Han
I installed 4.3.2d on Windows 11 Pro 24H2. I can not get updated comets to display. My File menu does not show the comet or asteroid data editor options, nor does Ctrl+3 or Ctrl+4 appear to do anything. It appears that I can update the comet database via File/Settings/Update, and a new file is written to Documents/hnsky/hns_cmt.cmt, but recent comets like C2025A6 (Lemmon) and C2025R2 (Swan) are not showing up on the screen, nor in the object search menu. If I download https://minorplanetcenter.net/iau/MPCORB/CometEls.txt...

Since CCDCiel now works for you using INDI starter, then it should also be possible to connect HNSKY to the same mount driver. Does that now work for you? Han
Han, Yes, I have tried that (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install indi-eqmod). The output of such a command is in my previous message. I guess that precludes me from using HNSKY in Linux Kubuntu. Thank you. Ari
Normally I'm working in Windows and I'm not an expert in Linux. Did you try the second line of the instruction?: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:mutlaqja/ppa sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install indi-eqmod
Hello Han, I'm afraid something didn't go as expected. Please check the output of the commands I issued below and let me know what to do. Thank you. Ari ari@ari-asus:~$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:mutlaqja/ppa [sudo] password for ari: Repository: 'Types: deb URIs: https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/mutlaqja/ppa/ubuntu/ Suites: noble Components: main ' Description: Latest INDI Library and drivers! Use the eqmod driver: https://indilib.org/telescopes/skywatcher/eqmod.html Cheers, Han
Hello. Basic questions from someone starting on Linux, Kubuntu, INDI, and HSNSKY: where do I find the driver for the Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro Synscan mount to be added to HNSKY/INDI? How do I install it? I only found the Sky-Watcher Alt-Az driver, which was already an option in the HNSKY settings menu. I am running Kubuntu 24.04.2. Thanks in advance. Ari

Good it works now. I still hope to understand why the latest version doesn't work for you. So somewhere in the future you try the 4.2.6 and then again 4.3.2 and report back? Cheers, Han
hnsky 4.1.33b (lower case this time for some reason) installed perfectly - all the weirdness is gone ~ works flawlessly! Thanks han.k - couldn't have done it without your indispensable help ;-) HAPPY CAMPER - now, gotta get out the telescope and 'play'....
Ubuntu Software window sez version 4.3.2b is 'potentially unsafe' and 'unknown license'... then goes into 'Unable to find HNSKY.desktop'... but appears to have uninstalled - thanks. Next: install version 4.1.33b and see how that works ;-)
Normally you can click on the debian package hnsky_amd64 .deb and select remove:. Double-click on .deb Ubuntu Software window will open Press the "Remove" button Alternative method would be by command line sudo dpkg -r hnsky_amd64.deb The dirty way would be to delete directory /opt/hnsky
not sure how to do the debugger thingy... there's this icon in my dash for HNSKY that I click on and it launches - that's about all I know on running it ;-) will uninstall and install version 4.1.33b to see it if helps :-| ...oops - looked to uninstall, but when I go to 'App Details' it launches my ubuntu software which says can't find that application.. look in list and it's not there ~ like I said earlier "this 64-bit Ubunto 24.04lts laptop doesn't seem to 'like it'... the program, although 'installed',...

The only other way to find the problem would be to run the program at your setup in a debugger.
Older versions are available here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/hnsky/files/linux_installer/older/ Did you try this: Can you try to delete in your home directory the path ".hnsky". Then try to install again. Note: I'm, using the Wayland desktop No idea if this makes a difference. Tell me if you somehow make progress. Up to now I never had a bug report like you have. Maybe if you run it in a debug window, you get some information about the crash. Han
...never get any error info - it just goes away, then some times pops back up like nothing happened (except maybe one or more desktop applications crashing) only to finally crash requiring restarting HNSKY altogether. Was hoping to maybe find an older version to replace the latest version with but no links to older versions... perhaps check archive.org 'WayBackMachine' for one ;-) Note: I'm, using the Wayland desktop, not xorg... not sure which you use and may make the difference... peculiar that...
The screenshot
I have now a virtual machine running Ubuntu 24.04.01 LTS. All works normal. The big question is now why it doesn't run at your setup. Can you try to delete in your home directory the path ".hnsky". Then try to install again. If that doesn't help. Can you describe when it crashes? ? Any hint in th error messages? Next step would be to try an version with full debug information Han
looking at my conky display as I run HNSKY, there's plenty of RAM available, swap file got plenty of room, the dual core processor is nowhere maxed out, and the network connection (s) are fine (local area network cable, and (2) wifi - one pci the other usb)... it's just glitch as heck with HNSKY :-\
the Lubuntu 18.04lts machine has the 32 bit version of latest HNSKY and has only 1Gb RAM the Ubuntu 24.04lts machine has the 64bit version of latest HNSKY and has 2Gb RAM ...on the Lubuntu machine HNSKY works flawlessly ...on the Ubuntu machine HNSKY works like crap - almost unmanageable! p.s. - btw: HNSKY works fine on my win7 64bit w/2Gb RAM partition ;-)
Strange. I will have an Ubuntu system later today.

install is fine - issue is it keeps crashing when I try to edit settings - will crash to empty desktop, then it's back up again...and will do this a few times as I change settings before complete crash to desktop and doesn't pop back up - usually crashing anything else running in background like conky, etc. Otherwise it 'runs' fine... just 'buggy' (and yep - admin)
All works under Lubuntu24. Ubuntu 24 can't be that different. To test it I have to make a virtual machine running Ubuntu 24. I will do that next days. What happens it you download the tar archive and run it somewhere on you home directory? This one: https://sourceforge.net/projects/hnsky/files/linux_installer/hnsky_amd64.tar.gz/download Are you running as admin? Han
Yep, downloaded hnsky_amd64.deb but installed it for Ubuntu 24.04lts, not Lubuntu which is Ubuntu Light ... my laptop with Lubuntu works fine with HNSKY, but my Ubuntu is not so 'friendly' ;-) installed fine.. appears to run fine, until you go to adjust settings, etc. then it crashes out stuff...

Here it runs fine on Lubuntu 24. See attached. Are your installing the amd64 (and not the arm64) version? This one: https://sourceforge.net/projects/hnsky/files/linux_installer/hnsky_amd64.deb/download See attached. If you use QApt package installer it should work. Can you try again? Once installed you could add a larger star database. Han
Just installed the latest version and it 'works' (I guess), but anytime I try to adjust anything it crashes and often corrupts my desktop - crashing other things as well. Seems to work fine on my Lubuntu 18.04lts 32-bit laptop using an older version, but this 64-bit Ubunto 24.04lts laptop doesn't seem to 'like it'... the program, although 'installed', does not show up in my 'ubuntu software' app for some reason, but does show up in the 'show apps' section so I could pin it to the dash for easy launching....

Hi Robert, Thanks for the feedback. I will check it. Han
I have noticed when displaying this star on version 4.3.0 it's location is different than where some other programs have it. For example astronomy.com, Wikipedia, earthsky.org etc.
Good it works and thanks for the feedback :) Han
Hello Short answer: yes. Working as advertised. Long answer: was not easy as I decided to bring back my Linux Mint installation back to somewhere when I knew hnsky was working alright. My Linux laptop is my... euh... 'playground' where this 65 years old test if an old dog can really learn new tricks. As of now the answer is: most of the time. So I take images (with timeshift) of my system before 'playing'. I had done some stuff that failed and I had this notion that this did not help. But during...
The problem is fixed in HNSKY version 4.3.2b. Mint 21.3 has one of the latest openssl and this was not accessed properly by HNSKY. This is now fixed. Can you try again? Unfortunately due to the error the asteroid file in ~/.hnsky the size increased to 4 gbyte. This should be ignored by this latest version and it should allow an quick update of the asteroid database reducing the size less then one mbyte. Does this work for you? Cheers, Han
