Hello! I'm just starting to get into mapping for orienteering events (Ohio US) ... question: does OOM allow for use of an external GPS (Garmin Glo 2) to plot current location for fieldwork on a Windows 10 tablet (Suface Go)? I currently have it connected via bluetooth, shows its paired and location privacy / com port settings seem to be okay, but i can't see current location in OOM, or any other application on my tablet for that matter. Looking for confirmation if this is possible to work in OOM,...

There is no convenient way to do this yet. The OpenOrienteering logo symbol was done by importing vector data into an empty map first, than editing the map file (XML). The latter would no longer be needed once we finish https://github.com/OpenOrienteering/mapper/issues/245.

Hi, I am doing my first sprint-map, using referenced satelite photos for background. I have recently started and am still exploring / looking for good workflows. I have started to draw lines with 529.1.1 and fill areas with open land, forbidden area etc. The plan was then to fill the "streets" with urban area. Doing so with the fill tool also fills some of my open land and forbidden areas. I guess there is some logic behind it and how I used 529.1.1 as tool for drawing the other areas. What is the...

My fault - I should have mentioned that numeric input was just needed to make reference point for the georefering of any background raster map image. WKT, GDAL and VRT are all way out of my league. Even CSV files should work, although not yet with geographic coordinates, and not with the full power of GDAL unless you create a VRT file, too. Out of the box, you might go with this structure: WKT,Remark POINT(649075 394162), i.e. - You must used WKT format, in a column named WKT. - You must use two columns.

Good idea! But I couldn't get the import function to work. I don't know how to make a gpx-file with the right syntax, but I made a "random" track between 2 points with a web-based map software. Exported the track and edited the coordinates according to my ref. points. Then in OOM I added the gpx-file as a georeferrenced background - and that worked fine ! Thanks a lot putting me onto this idea !!

  • Anonymous posted a comment on discussion Mapper

I don't know a direct way, however you may import a GPX file containing a single point after editing the coordinates within it.

You can always add map design features with course setting software. This not so much different from adding a template in Mapper. However, I don't think this solves the original problem, which is: Make a club logo or similar a permanent feature of the map file, independent of the course setter's willingness and ability.

I just figured this out -- the best way to do this in my opinion is to go into Purple Pen. Import your map, and then you can import an image into the map. In purple pen, go to Add and then Image, and you can pull in the image without having to trace it or do anything like that. In OOM, you have to trace the logo or image like you would map features, and the results are not nearly as good as importing the map into Purple Pen, then putting your logo on it there. Hope that helps!

I use OMAP format for fieldwork, on an Android tablet, and it works very well. The only problem I encounter is with the manual georeferencing - on some maps. As far as I can tell, I am entering all the necessary data (screenshot attached).

  • Kai Pastor Kai Pastor posted a comment on discussion Mapper

It really looks like you miss some step for the manual (normal!) georeferencing. There is no benefit from georeferencing with OSM data except for convenience. Your description does not mention that you manually entered some projected coordinate reference system (e.g. UTM). Note that you should use OMAP format for fieldwork at the moment.

  • Anonymous posted a comment on discussion Mapper

We have many older maps originally drawn in OCD format, but never georeferenced. Updating these when using OOM for fieldwork (Android) and drafting is problematic, since the external GPS unit will not generate a properly positoned gpx track. For drawing new maps, I can include an OSM template, which OOM can use to provide georeferencing, but for older maps I would really like to be able to georeference them manually. So, yes, this is kind of a dead thread, but... Is there any hope of getting JPEG2000 back into Mapper? The USGS 1m image files are really only usable/viewable with the JPEG2000 files. With those, I've been able to map out small structures that are only 2-4 meters on a side (like lean-tos and tent platforms in a campground) which is very useful for detail maps.

Just to clarify: you cannot select anything from a template. You can print templates with the map if you want, and you can use them as a visual guide for drawing objects. That's all. Does the latest version of OOM load with the new ISOM2017 symbol set, or is there somewhere we can get it to update our software? BEE

I have been using the Garmin Glo external GPS receiver with OOM (version 7) on a Samsung TabS, and the free Bluetooth GPS app as the communicator between the Glo and OOM (Mock GPS Provider is enabled in the Bluetooth app. That combination seems to work just fine. Brian Ellis Canada

The "complete map" example has georeferencing, so the GPS feature should be available with this file.

Hi Rob! Do You have any tips for me? I've tried two different GPS bluetooth apps and with non of them the external GPS Garmin GLO can get in contact with OOM, however it works normal with Google Maps and Sweden Topo Maps, but not with OOM. The internal GPS in my Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 also cannot make any contact with OOM. I've enabled Mock GPS Provider and tried with wo different maps, at least one is for sure georeferenced. I've also tried re-instaling OOM. Best Regards! Matts Engvall

Hi! I'm trying to make external GPS Garmin GLO work with OOM. The recomended app Bluetooth GPS gets in contact with Garmin GLO but OOM does not get any contact with the app Bluetooth GPS - nor does Google Maps. (The app Sweden Topo Maps however seems to works well with Garmin GLO) Any suggestions about the problem? Matts Engvall Sweden

The third number is a combination of bits for flags (e.g. start of curve). The unit is 1/1000 mm on paper. For flags see https://github.com/OpenOrienteering/mapper/blob/9ae1f4257170af725b3096a1d75e63b08ad8f9a8/src/core/map_coord.h#L56-L103. For grid coordinates, you will have to transform the coordinates using information from the georeferencing.

Hi Love the work you do For a private project, i am trying to parse .oom files. But i have problems parsing the coodinates. It seems that the semicolon-seperated coordinate pairs somtimes have a 3rd number like 1 or 16. What is that Also what is the projection of the coodinates? Micrometers from origin with gravitoid applied? UTM coordinates? To be specific, i just need the coordinates converted to UTM.
