State receives demands for creation of 28 more districts
BHUBANESWAR: Odisha govt has received demands from people for creation of 28 more districts in state. Revenue minister Sudam Marndi said this in the state assembly here on Wednesday.
“State govt will take proper decision at appropriate time on the demands after considering all parameters. A petition related to creation of new districts has been filed before the Orissa high court. According to the court order, no final decision can be taken on creation of new districts without taking permission from the high court,” said the minister in his reply in the assembly.
Odisha has now 30 districts. Demands have been received from people to carve out the new 28 districts from 15 existing districts. Most of these are big districts like Mayurbhanj, Ganjam and Sundargarh.
According to the minister, people have demanded to carve out districts like Ghumusar, Rushikulya (headquarter at Aska), Bhanjanagar and Berhampur from the existing Ganjam district. Similarly, govt received proposals for creating West Mayurbhanj, Rairangapur, Khiching and Karanjia or Panchipur from the existing Mayurbhanj district.

There is a proposal for creating two districts-Bonai and Rourkela- out of Sundargarh. “Some petitions are received demanding not to form Rourkela district by dividing the existing Sundargarh district,” said the remark section of the minister's reply.

People have demanded creation of Nilgiri, Soro and Jaleswar from Balasore district. Similar demands have come from Balangir district to make Titlagarh, Kantabanji and Patnagarh as new districts.

Demands have also come for creation of Padampur (Bargarh), Dharmagarh district (Kalahandi), Bhubaneswar (Khurda), Talcher and Pallahara Gadjat (Angul), Chandikhol and Athagarh (Cuttack), Kuchinda (Sambalpur), Baliguda (Kandhamal), Anandpur (Keonjhar), Gunupur (Rayagada) and Nimapara (Puri).

Last year, chief minister Naveen Patnaik had announced that Padampur sub-division in Bargarh district will be a new district. This announcement had encouraged others to demand for creation of new districts.
