A video of a social media user recently went viral, shedding light on a service on Instagram that sells concert videos designed to be posted as if you were there—even if you were actually lounging at home in your PJs. The Instagram account ‘Get Your Flex’ marks the beginning of a burgeoning trend where netizens sidestep FOMO by purchasing the appearance of an enviable social life. Though the concept already has its takers, the idea has now extended beyond concerts. We get into the details behind this new digital phenomenon.
Coldplay, Diljit Dosanjh, AP Dhillon, Karan Aujla, Maroon 5, and more among purchased clipsAnushka Chhikara, the content creator who purchased a short clip of Diljit Dosanjh’s performance, said it was as a “social experiment” that left her impressed yet concerned about a “dystopian” future. She shared details about the services provided by the account which quickly gained reactions from netizens who shared their two cents about the concept.
“The idea of purchasing videos to make it look like you attended a concert might sound questionable but it probably isn’t the worst thing one can do. This should at least raise awareness about the accessibility of concert tickets for genuine music lovers. Not everyone can pay over 90,000 bucks for a single ticket” — Sunil Desai, an entrepreneur
‘Everyone deserves to feel included,’ shares founder of Get Your Flex
The founder of Get Your Flex, an 18-year-old man who started the business with his sister, talked to us about the idea and said, “Many people can’t afford to go to concerts because of the expensive tickets. Everyone deserves to feel included, and if sharing a video gives someone happiness, why not?” He also added, “People who go for concerts still ask us for videos so they can keep their phones away and actually enjoy the concert.” In addition to concerts, people have also been demanding for things like travel videos, photos of expensive cafes, and also soft launch photos to make their exes jealous. “Ever since the business gained traction, we got 300+ emails for job applications and collaboration requests from places as far and beyond as Dubai, New York, Pakistan, and even Bangladesh,” the young business owner added.
“For some, it’s about showing off. For others, it’s about keeping up. Either way, the trend reveals how deeply social media dictates our lives to an extent where it shifts our definition of authenticity” — Sulakshana Jain, a clinical psychologist
