New advanced operation theatre complex opened at eye hospital
Thiruvananthapuram: A new state-of-the-art operation theatre complex was inaugurated at the Govt Eye Hospital, which was earlier upgraded into Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), in Thiruvananthapuram, on Friday.
The complex, set up at a cost of around Rs 10 crore, is located on the fifth floor of the new specialty block of the eye hospital. The new facility houses four operation theatres, equipped to handle all types of eye surgeries, including transplant procedures.
Inaugurating the facility, health minister Veena George stated that the well-equipped complex will allow more surgeries to be performed on the same day, benefiting a larger number of patients.
The operation theatres include modern surgical tables, anaesthesia systems, and procedure rooms. Additionally, facilities for day-care surgeries have been set up, with two day-care surgery wards arranged on the fourth floor for patients undergoing minor procedures. The hospital currently performs around 10,000 surgeries annually, including complex retinal and vitreoretinal surgeries.
The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology is equipped with cutting-edge facilities for diagnosing and treating various eye diseases, including conditions affecting the retina, cornea, glaucoma, and paediatric eye disorders. Specialised clinics also function for glaucoma, conjunctivitis, and paediatric eye diseases. The hospital has 250 inpatient beds for patients requiring extended care.
