AGARTALA: The first Vice Chancellor of Tripura (Central) University, leading economist and renowned author Prof Arunoday Saha has been awarded
Padma Shri this year along with 112 others for his outstanding contribution in the field of Literature and Education.
Prof Saha is an academician, former professor, politician, and writer from Agartala, Tripura. He holds a BA from Presidency College, Kolkata, an MA from Calcutta University, and a PhD in Economics from Utah State University of US.
Born into a businessman family in 1948 in Independent India at Bishalgarh of Tripura’s Sepahijala district, he started his career as a school teacher.
Later, he served in different government colleges and Tripura University in different capacities as a teacher. In 2007, he became the first Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University after its elevation to a central university and served until his retirement in February 2013.
Beyond academia, Dr. Saha is associated with politics as well. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he fought the from West Tripura Parliamentary Constituency as a Congress candidate. Dr Saha is also a recognized writer, with his works published in various journals and newspapers.
He has authored at least books on Bengali literature and some of his creations have been translated into Hindi and Assamese. This is for the first time, Tripura’s name for Padma Shri in the field of literature and education was recognised although every year from 2019 personalities from cultural fields and social sectors were conferred Padma Shri.
Prof Saha was honoured with Tripura Bibhushan award in 2023 for his contributions. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha congratulated Prof Saha after being nominated for Padma Shri.
