Mohali: A thief attempted to break in at a private bank in the busy market of Phase 3B2 in Mohali on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The thief was caught on CCTV camera as he failed to break open the cash chest. Police registered an FIR on Tuesday.
The attempt was made at the loan branch of a private bank in a market where police have deployed round-the-clock security cover, especially between 10 pm to 4 am.
According to police, around 1 am, a perpetrator breached a private bank's loan branch in Phase-3B2. He gained entry by breaking the entrance locks and stole seven mobile phones and two tablets. He endeavoured to breach the safe in the cashier's room but was unsuccessful. The incident was recorded on CCTV surveillance.
Following a complaint lodged by the bank's chief manager (legal), Mataur police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
Initially, the thief ascended to the gymnasium on the second floor, verified its vacancy, then descended to the first floor and breached the bank's locks utilising a rod. He shattered the glass door to gain entry and remained within the premises for two hours. He subsequently ransacked staff drawers, appropriating available cash.
The breach was discovered when a young patron and his caretaker, arriving at the gymnasium, noticed the damaged shutter and door, alerting the building proprietor, who subsequently informed the bank manager. Bank staff thereafter notified authorities.
