Chennai: Five camels that were bought for consumption ahead of Ramadan in Shoolagiri were rescued and brought to Chennai. Police have booked a case and look out for those who bought them have fled. Ritika Goal, animal activist working for the welfare of camels said, about 22 camels were seized last year. Of which, 20 were sent back to
Rajasthan and two were sent to a shelter in Chennai.
“Camel meat is not a certified meat under
FSSAI. Transportation of camels from the state is illegal. A large population is transported illegally to Kolkata. Shoolagiri border is a hotspot and every year we rescue many camels. All these five were male camels and they looked starved with injuries on their legs,” she said.
