“We followed the three-member gang even as they headed to the Tasmac outlet that was located in a remote area. We waited while the trio broke into the Tasmac outlet and came out with cash and a few bottles of liquor,” a police officer said.
According to him, one of the gang members threw stones at them and attacked a police constable with a knife when they rounded them up. “Sub-inspector of police (SI) Ibrahim warned him several times not to unleash attack on us, but he was in no mood to stop. In an act of self-defence, the SI opened fire on him in his leg and nabbed him. In the melee, the remaining two miscreants managed to flee.”
The officer identified the arrested person as ‘Sambar Mani’, a native of Palpalli in Wayanad in Kerala. “A habitual offender, he has six cases pending against him with the Gudalur police and another nine cases with the Kerala police. He is mainly into house and Tasmac shop break-ins.”
He said Mani was provided first aid at the Gudalur government hospital, before taking him to the Ooty government medical college and hospital to treat the bullet wound.
Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt for the remaining two miscreants.
