Truck driver from Namakkal dies by suicide after losing 75 lakh in online gambling
Namakkal: A 45-year-old man died by suicide in Namakkal district on Saturday, after he lost 75 lakh in online gambling.
The deceased has been identified as S Tamil Mani, of Sadayampalayam near Kumarapalayam. He was working as a truck driver.
On Saturday evening, Tamil sent a video to his wife Yasodha, 40, and some friends, in which he revealed his involvement in various online gambling games, including online rummy and IPL cricket betting. "He said in the video that he had debts amounting to 75 lakh which he owed several people. He added that he was taking the extreme step as he could not repay the loans," Yasodha said.
Soon after she saw the video, Yasodha filed a complaint with Kumarapalayam police. Yasodha and her husband's friends searched for him all night. On Sunday morning, they found him dead by suicide at a puncture shop owned by one of his friends. Police who were alerted, retrieved the body and sent it to the Government Hospital in Kumarapalayam for a postmortem.
Meanwhile, Kumarapalayam police inspector TA Dhavamani said Tamil had mentioned several names, including Vidya, Prakash, Balaji, and Vijayakumar, in the video. "We have begun inquiries with them and will take appropriate action if they are found culpable," the inspector said.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is on.
