New Delhi: After chandan, chinar and cherry blossom, Delhi Development Authority has brought the famous Lakadong turmeric to Delhi. Lakadong turmeric is a rare and prized variety of turmeric that is native to the Jaintia hills of Meghalaya. It is known for its high curcumin content, which gives it a bright yellow colour and a distinct aroma and earthy flavour.
An official said that on the direction of lieutenant governor VK Saxena, DDA had implemented a pilot project for planting turmeric at Baansera four months back, which exhibited an 80% success rate.
"Now, a decision has been taken to replicate the plantation at its other green spaces too. Further, plans are afoot to make this much sought-after variety of turmeric available to the people of Delhi. DDA will take up the sale of this variety in future," said the official further.
The trial cultivation of Lakadong turmeric was in line with Saxena's persistent innovative approach aimed at adding diversity to Delhi's flora and comes after the plantation of chandan, chinar, cherry blossom, water apple, green apple and grapes.
