Associations yet to submit bills, Nat’l Games infra rusting: Gaude
Sports minister Govind Gaude unveils Goa team jersey during the kit distribution ceremony and send off to the Goa contingent for the 38th National Games
Panaji: Sports minister Govind Gaude has warned the state associations that strict action will be taken if they do not submit the bills and utilisation certificates for the money that the govt paid them to prepare for the last edition of the National Games held in Goa.
The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) had sanctioned grants of approximately Rs 15.4 crore to 35 state associations so that they could prepare adequately for the National Games, held in Goa between Oct 26 and Nov 9, 2023. Even though preparations started later than expected, Goa won a record number of medals, thanks largely to the record funding of Rs 11.2 crore — 80 % of the total amount — that was released to the associations.
“It’s been more than a year and most associations have not submitted financial bills and utilisation certificates of the National Games,” Gaude said during the kit distribution ceremony and send off to the Goa contingent for the 38th National Games to be held in Uttarakhand later this month. “It shows your lack of interest in sports and players. The Goa Olympic Association (GOA) and associations must take this up. If you ask for Rs 10 lakh, then give us accounts for that. If you don't give, how can you expect SAG and govt to clear your bills?.”
The sports minister said he is answerable to the public for the money spent and called for accountability from the state associations. “We are not here to distribute freebies. We have to follow the system," he said.
“We spent so much money on associations. You select players, send them for the Games and we spend money. We built infrastructure for you (during the National Games), I don't want it to get rusty. It must be put to good use. I have three years of experience (as sports minister). I have observed that whenever there are National Games or national level tournaments, they train for 20 days or more. You can't win medals with that. You need to train as hard as possible. Continuity matters," said Gaude
Gaude also trained his guns on the coaches and assured associations that he would transfer any erring coach, if a written complaint is provided to him.
"Don't come to me with a verbal complaint. If there are irregularities in coaching, write to me and I promise you that I will take strict action. Goans are happy (only) being the best in the state. Don't give me reasons and excuses. I want glory at national and international level too," he said.
Goa will see a 150-member contingent including coaches taking part in 19 disciplines. Irvin Cordo has been appointed as the chef de mission.
In the last edition at home, Goa won 27 gold, 27 silver, 38 bronze to finish with 92 medals at the ninth spot in the medals tally.
