Prepare a list of illiterate people in state, says CM
Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant directed govt officials to prepare a list of illiterates in the state on Tuesday. Goa has set a target to attain 100% literacy by Dec 19 this year.
The latest National Family Health Survey for 2019-21 shows that Goa’s literacy rate rose to 93.2% from 88.7% recorded in the 2011 census.
The chief minister had recentlyconductud a review of the New India Literacy Mission.

He directed the director of panchayats and the director of municipal administration to instruct secretaries and chief officers to provide a list of illiterates in their respective panchayat or municipal areas or to issue a certificate confirming that their constituency is literate.
The state govt is working on a mission to attain 100% literacy by Dec 19, this year, the CM said at the NITI Ayog meeting in New Delhi. “Govt is committed to developing Goa as a global educational hub.”
The economic survey states that, as per the population projections by the National Commission on Population of the Union health and family welfare ministry, Goa’s population in 2024 is expected to be approximately 15.8 lakh.
Goa’s birth rate had fallen during the pandemic, which is yet to improve to the pre-pandemic levels.
Goa’s birth rate was 11.6 live births per thousand as per pre-pandemic data.
Goa’s natural population growth rate also continues to dip over the last five years, from 2015 to 2022. This growth rate is projected to remain flat at 0.4% annually, up to 2036, as per the economic survey.
