Gurgaon: Clogged sewer lines and sewage overflow are leaving roads and even parks inundated in Sector 5. Residents claim that the issue of overflowing sewers has been a recurring problem in the area for the past 5-6 month. The stagnant water also serves as a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, they said.
Sheela Kataria, a resident, told TOI that walking to the nearby temple or the local market has become a nightmare these days. "We have been living with this problem for months now. The sewer water not only made it difficult to step outside our homes, but there is a terrible smell throughout the area. We have to hop on pavements to avoid the dirty water. Parks are inundated, leaving no space for children to play or for us to sit and relax," she said.
Residents claimed that despite filing numerous complaints with the MCG, there has been no action taken.
"The filthy water is everywhere. Despite filing several complaints, no one seems to care about our plight. Most of the sewer lines are clogged, and we hardly see any desilting work in the area for years now. The condition is deplorable, and how long are we supposed to suffer?" said Vinod Kumar Agarwal, another resident.
According to residents, the contract for the operation and maintenance of the sewer has expired, but no new arrangements have been made so far.
"MCG should have a contingency plan to ensure continuous maintenance. They cannot simply let the public suffer. The MCG needs to take immediate action, and the clogged sewer lines need to be cleared through a super sucker machine," said Dinesh Vashisht, former RWA president of Sector 5.
When contacted, MCG chief engineer Manoj Yadav said that the problem had not been brought to his knowledge yet. "But we will get the matter checked, and the needful will be done to resolve the problem," he said.
