Gurgaon: Four months after its much-delayed redevelopment, Sanath Road — a critical stretch connecting Atlas Chowk on NH-8 to Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road — will finally be illuminated. GMDA plans to undertake the installation of 95 LED streetlights across the 2.5-km stretch to provide better lighting for pedestrians and motorists alike.
The project is estimated to cost the development authority Rs 7.8 lakh. The installation work will be completed within two months after the allotment of the contract. "We have floated the tender and bids will be opened on Feb 13. After the allotment, it will take two months to complete the installation work," a senior GMDA official said.
"There are few patches that remain in complete darkness, which makes it risky for both motorists and pedestrians, especially when trying to cross the road," Vikas Kumar Yadav, a Sukhrali resident who works in a textile company located along Sanath Road, said. "The road has been developed well, but proper street lighting on the road is still missing. Installing these lights will definitely improve safety and visibility," he said.
The redevelopment of Sanath Road was proposed as a "model street" project focused on improving pedestrian friendliness, road safety and universal accessibility. However, it missed several deadlines after the project started in May 2021 and was only completed in Oct last year.
Sanath Road is a commercial and industrial hub and houses the busy Passport Seva Kendra, making it prone to frequent traffic congestion. The recent revamp of the road aimed to improve vehicular and non-motorised movement, along with organised parking and waiting areas.
Despite the completion of renovation work, the absence of adequate functional streetlights left the road dark and unsafe during nighttime. While lights have already been installed on the footpaths, poles erected on the road itself remain without fixtures. This has caused difficulties for motorists and pedestrians, particularly during foggy days when visibility is further compromised.
Additionally, GMDA will be installing fences to secure the greenbelt along the road.
