AIIMS Bhubaneswar student from Assam spoke to mom moments before suicide
Dibrugarh/Bhubaneswar: A day after a second-year MBBS student of AIIMS Bhubaneswar hailing from Assam's Dibrugarh died by suicide, the father of the student expressed shock and disbelief over his son's death.
"My wife called our son at 6 am from Dibrugarh to wake him up, as she did every day. He said he was getting up. I also called him around 6.30 am as we had plans to visit Puri together. When I tried reaching him later, there was no response. He was cheerful the day before and sounded completely alright during our last conversation," Baidyanath Mishra, the father of Ratnesh Kumar Mishra (21), told reporters.
Ratnesh was found hanging in his hostel room on Wednesday.
Mishra, who works as a priest and astrologer in Dibrugarh, brought his son's body home via flight on Thursday afternoon. The last rites were performed later in the day.
"My son was a brilliant student. He had studied at Sampoorna Kendra Vidyalaya in Dibrugarh before securing admission at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar," Mishra said.
Mishra was staying at a hotel outside the AIIMS campus at the time of the incident.
Sources said the 21-year-old student hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room (Hostel B, room no.502). He returned from his home with his father on Dec 24 and was supposed to appear for second year examination on Thursday.
"His father, an astrologer, stayed in a hotel at night after having dinner with him. His father said he received a call from his son on Tuesday morning and they planned to visit Jagannath Temple, Puri, on Wednesday," said a police officer.
But after some time, his father became worried when the student didn't respond to his multiple telephone calls. He came to know that the student had sent an audio message to his younger brother in Assam. After receiving a distress call from his younger son, the father immediately went to the hostel to find out about the victim. When he reached the hostel, he found that the door was locked from inside and nobody responded when he knocked," said the police.
His father, along with some students, broke open the door and found him hanging from the ceiling fan around 10.30 am on Wednesday. After receiving information, the security officer went to the spot and shifted the body to casualty. In the emergency, CPR and other life-saving measures were attempted, but he was later declared dead and police were informed, said official sources.
Police said they found the student's suicide note. "The student wrote in the letter that nobody was responsible for his death. He expressed his frustration over his life. We are investigating the case after registering an unnatural death case. Actual reason will be ascertained after the probe is over," said Abhimanyu Das, IIC, Khandagiri police station.
In the audio message to the younger brother, the victim suggested not selling the land. He also advised his younger brother to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor by staying in Assam.
