GUWAHATI: Cyclone Mocha fizzled out in northeast Myanmar, leaving a trail of destruction in southern
Mizoram, but spared other northeastern states where the IMD had warned of heavy to very heavy rain due to the effect of the cyclone.
In its last bulletin in association with the system linked to Mocha, issued at 12.15 pm on Monday, the IMD said the depression over Myanmar (remnants of cyclonic storm "Mocha" pronounced as "Mokha") moved southeastwards, weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area and lay centred at 8.30 am on Monday over northeast Myanmar and its neighbourhood.
It said the system was likely to weaken into a low-pressure area over northeast Myanmar and its neighbourhood during the next few hours, marking the end of the cyclone.
Siaha district in south Mizoram, which shares a border with Myanmar, was hit hard with over a hundred houses, including relief camps being damaged due to gusty winds caused by the Mocha impact. While according to disaster management officials, close to 6,000 people were impacted by Mocha, in other northeast states, there have been no such reports of damage.
The Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD on Monday morning said light to moderate rain occurred at many places over Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram, at a few places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland and Tripura during the last 24 hours when Mocha-effect was felt in the NE region.
