Over 7k dancers eye world record with Jhumur recital
Guwahati: Preparations are underway for ‘Jhumair Binandiya', a Jhumur dance recital scheduled to be held at Sarusajai in Guwahati on February 24, where over 7,000 participants aspire to make a world record while introducing the Jhumur dance of the Tea Tribes of Assam to a global audience.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the event.
Assam chief secretary (CS) Ravi Kota has issued directives to the district commissioners, emphasising the safety of female performers and requisite facilities, including transportation, medical aid and secure lodging for all performers and master trainers.
Kota, acknowledging Modi's confirmation to attend the event, instructed district commissioners (DCs) with substantial performer numbers to personally supervise the preparations and engage co-district commissioners while ensuring accountability of all officials involved.
The DCs have been instructed to collaborate closely with guardian ministers of the districts, MLAs and the additional chief secretary of the cultural affairs department as necessary. The CS has emphasised prioritising female performers' safety and ensuring secure transit to and from training venues.
He directed the DCs to establish district-level committees to oversee workshops, incorporating representatives from cultural and administrative stakeholders, alongside implementing a grievance redressal committee to address concerns. Regarding pre-event arrangements, district-level officers, appointed by DCs, will inspect accommodation and stadium facilities two to three days before February 20.
The CS instructed the DC of Kamrup (Metro) to co-ordinate accommodation and on-site arrangements for performers and directed district officers to inspect facilities at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, known as Sarusajai stadium, in Guwahati.
The cultural affairs department will also conduct Jhumur dance workshops in the state assembly constituencies from January 20 to 23. The dancers for the event will be selected during these workshops.
