Road accidents claim 2 lives in last 24 hours
Guwahati/Silchar: Assam recorded a string of road accidents in the last 24 hours, resulting in two deaths while four others others sustained injuries.
A schoolgirl was killed and another was injured after a truck hit them at Kanishail, Sribhumi town, on Friday morning. The speeding truck loaded with sand hit the two students when they were crossing the national highway on their way to school. Humaira Siddiqui, a Class II student, died on the spot while Hafsa Siddiqui was seriously injured. Hafsa was admitted to Sribhumi Civil Hospital.
DSP (Sribhumi) Narayan Boro along with a team of traffic police went to the spot on receiving the news of the accident and started an investigation. An agitated crowd protesting the accident blocked National Highway-8, which connects Assam with Tripura. Traffic movement was stopped for around two hours because of which over a hundred vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road.
The situation was brought under control after the intervention of the police.
In Darrang district, a speeding truck injured three individuals in separate incidents. The truck, registered in Sonitpur district, was travelling from Guwahati to Mangaldoi when it collided with a cyclist and two motorcyclists.
The vehicle also struck a passenger bus en route from Mangaldoi to Barpeta's Howly town, though no passengers sustained injuries.
Sipajhar police station traffic IC, Emdadul Hoque Choudhary, identified the injured as Haren Saharia, Sabed Ali and Matleb Ali. "Haren was riding the cycle, and he was struck near Ghodabandha road. The othertwo persons, who were travelling on the two wheeler, were hit on Kadamtali Chowk in Sipajhar," he said.
The injured were taken to Sipajhar primary health centre before being transferred to Mangaldoi Civil Hospital for treatment.
The IC confirmed the driver's arrest and ongoing investigation. "We cannot reveal the name, but a case has been registered against him," the officer added.
On Thursday night, a dumper truck struck a young boy at Boramthuriyani in Dhemaji district. Police confirmed that driver Rajan Maithay from Karbi Anglong hit the boy as he attempted to cross the road. The boy was first taken to Ghilamora public health centre, then transferred to a private hospital in Dibrugarh for advanced care, where he unfortunately passed away.
