GUWAHATI: Gold bars valued at over Rs 1 crore, smuggled through the most frequently used route from Indo-Myanmar border via
Manipur and Nagaland to Assam and through it to other states, were seized in Karbi Anglong district in the early hours on Sunday while heroin with a street value of Rs 3 crore smuggled through the same route was seized near Srirampur in Kokrajhar district.
Police arrested two persons identified as Mohammed Mahim and Mohammed Masaruddin. They hail from Manipur and were travelling on a night bus.
John Das, sub-divisional police officer of Bokajan, said, “Altogether 14 gold bars, weighing over 2 kg, were recovered from the accused during a search of the bus at naka checking. The value of the seized gold bars will approximately be over Rs 1 crore.”
The two were produced before a local court in Karbi Anglong and sent to judicial custody.
Police in Kokrajhar district late on Saturday night seized heroin weighing about 3 kg and valued at around Rs 3 crore near Srirampur gate and arrested Sainul Miya and Raju Hussain in connection with the case.
A senior police officer said the route from Indo-Myanmar border to Assam through Manipur and Nagaland is the main route through which smugglers attempt to smuggle drugs, gold and weapons.
“The second route is from Manipur to Guwahati,” the officer added.
