HYDERABAD: In a tragic case of animal cruelty, 10 of the 11 dogs that survived after being thrown off a 40-foot bridge in Eddumailaram village, Sangareddy district, succumbed to their injuries over the past month. The only surviving dog was pregnant at the time of the incident.
“She gave birth to five puppies on Friday. She had injuries on all four limbs, just like the other dogs. They were thrown with their mouths gagged and limbs tied. The mother dog — the only surviving one — has not eaten in two days. Her food intake is very low, and she remains extremely weak. She is undergoing treatment,” said Prithvi Paneru, a member of Citizens For Animals, an animal welfare group involved in the rescue efforts.
He further shared how the fatalities staggered over the past few weeks. Two dogs died on January 5, followed by three more on January 17. Another dog succumbed on January 20, while three more passed away four days ago. The most recent two deaths were reported on Thursday night and Saturday morning.
"Every time a dog died, we transported the carcass from Nagole to Sangareddy for a post-mortem examination and handed it over to the police," said Prithvi Paneru, a member of Citizens For Animals. Despite these efforts, there has been no progress in the investigation to identify those responsible for the brutal act.
The horrific incident came to light earlier this month when it was reported that 32 dogs had allegedly been thrown off the bridge. Twenty-one of them died on the spot, while 11 survived with severe injuries.
“Now, with just one left battling for survival, we remain deeply concerned about its condition. We continue to demand justice, urging authorities to act on the FIR registered in the case and ensure those responsible are held accountable,” Paneru added.
