HYDERABAD: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy Friday condemned the
BJP's remarks on the late balladeer Gaddar and criticised the Union govt for ‘ignoring' him for the Padma award. The CM also expressed his displeasure over Union minister Bandi Sanjay's statement that the NDA govt would never honour Gaddar with the Padma award.
Without naming Sanjay, Revanth warned that any further ‘dishonour' of Gaddar would force the Congress govt in the state to rename the locality housing the BJP's state office after the late singer.
"How will they write their office address without mentioning Gaddar?" he asked. Revanth emphasised that great personalities must be respected regardless of ideological differences. "Their policy that awards will be given only to those who follow their ideology is not correct," he said.
The CM recalled that the state govt had recommended five individuals, including Gaddar, for the Padma awards, but none of them was considered by the Centre. He pointed out that five personalities from Andhra Pradesh received Padma awards, questioning why
Telangana's icons, who had contributed significantly to the state's progress, were overlooked.
"We will no longer appeal to the BJP govt to honour these greats. However, we will ensure Gaddar and others are honoured once a Rahul Gandhi-led govt is in power at the Centre," said Revanth. He further criticised the BJP, questioning how the same party that "disrespected" Mahatma Gandhi could honour Gaddar.
Revanth also recalled how a former chief minister made Gaddar wait outside his office for hours, leading to public outrage. He said BJP leaders, including Bandi Sanjay, would meet a similar fate in the next elections for allegedly insulting Gaddar.
On the occasion of Gaddar's birth anniversary, the CM announced plans to build a Gaddar memorial at Necklace Road and released two books and a CD of his songs. Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka also announced that Gaddar Film Awards would be introduced this year.
