Indore: Milk collection in Indore region has jumped leaving around a lakh litre surplus daily, prompting outstation supply of milk to Maharashtra and Bhopal from Indore, thanks to rains and availability of green fodder.
Daily collection of milk in Indore has increased to around 13 lakh liters as against the per day consumption of 12-12.5 lakh liter per day, according to Indore Dudgh Vikreta Sangh.
The surplus milk is supplied to
Maharashtra and Bhopal.
Rainfall activity in summer months in many parts of the state that improved the availability of green fodder for cattle aided in increasing milk production in the region, said dairy owners and milk suppliers.
Bharat Mathurawala, president, Indore Dudgh Vikreta Sangh said, “Milk collection has jumped in Indore region and has surpassed demand leaving around a lakh liter surplus. Surplus milk from Indore is going to many cities in
Maharashtra and some centers in Bhopal.”
Milk demand in Indore is pegged at around 12 lakh liter a day which is seen stable in the near term, said dairy owners and milk suppliers.
They said milk collection is anticipated to increase further as farmers may purchase new cattle in the festival months starting ‘Rakshabandhan’.
Some of the surplus milk from the Indore region is also making its way to storage plants. Indore has about 20-25 chiller plants for storage of milk.
Mathurawala said, “We are hoping for a high collection season this year because weather remained almost conducive and farmers earned better remuneration. This will encourage farmers to buy new cattle in the festival season which is a regular practice.”
Indore Cooperative Dugdh Sangh, which sells packaged milk has also witnessed a jump in milk supplies and is anticipating an increase of close to 8-10 per cent in revenues in the financial year 2023-24 amid a rise in sales of packaged milk. TNN
