Jaipur:
Rajasthan is all set to get its fifth tiger reserve as the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has given in-principle approval to declare Dholpur Tiger Reserve.
After a team constituted by the NTCA submitted its report on the area proposed to be declared as the new reserve in October, the forest department received go ahead nod to upgrade the status of the areas spanning over Dholpur & Karauli as tiger reserve.
Additional chief secretary (forest and environment) Shikhar Agarwal tweeted, “NTCA accords in-principle approval for much awaited Dholpur Tiger Reserve.”
As per the department records, the forest area houses nine tigers and upgrade in the status is expected to strengthen the ongoing tiger conservation efforts.
As per the preliminary proposal, the tiger reserve will be 1,058 square kilometre, including 368 sq. km core and 690 sq. km buffer.
Out of the total proposed core area, 197 sq. km and 170 sq. km fall under Karauli and Dholpur districts. A small portion of the forest block falling in Bharatpur district has also been incorporated in the proposed reserve.
