Kozhikode: Manjeri police have arrested a man following the suicide of his wife at Elankoor in Malappuram. The woman's family had complained that she took the extreme step due to the mental harassment and physical assault she had suffered at the hands of her husband.
The arrested has been identified as Kapilthodi Prabin, 32, a staff nurse at Government Medical College Hospital, Manjeri, and a native of Peleppuram. Prabin's wife Vishnuja, 26, was found hanging at his house on Jan 30. He was taken into custody on Saturday evening and his arrest was recorded on Sunday afternoon under sections involving domestic abuse and abetment of suicide.
Vishnuja's father Paloli Vasudavan said that Prabin used to physically assault and mentally harass Vishnuja over her failing to secure employment and saying that she was not attractive and that he didn't get enough gold from her family. He alleged that Prabin's family members also supported him while he harassed Vishnuja.
"When we tried to intervene in the issue, Vishnuja said that she would handle the issues herself. But now we understand that she used to suffer physical assault and mental harassment from him," Vasudevan said.
He added that a friend of Vishnuja had noticed injury marks on her body and had asked about it but she maintained that she would deal with the issues herself, he said.
Their marriage was held in May 2023. Vishnuja had completed her degree course and HDC course and was trying to secure a bank job.
Malappuram DSP T S Sinoj is in charge of the probe. The accused will be presented in court on Monday.
Police had last month arrested the husband of the 19-year-old newly married woman hailing from Kondotty who had committed suicide allegedly following mental harassment by her husband over her complexion.
