Mangaluru: On board the Coast Guard Vessel ICGS Varaha, the Karnataka governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot observed various operational demonstrations by the
Indian Coast Guard (ICG) District Headquarters No 3 during their Day at Sea event, organised to commemorate the Coast Guard Raising Day on Sunday.
Embarking on the Coast Guard vessel from the New Mangalore Port (NMP), the governor assessed the operational preparedness of ICG headquarters through practical demonstrations. The five-hour demonstrations at sea proved to be an exciting experience for guests invited from diverse govt departments, industries, institutions, and relatives of Coast Guard personnel. Coast Guard ships ICGS Saksham, ICGS Amartya, ICGS Rajdoot, ICGS Savitri Bai Phule, interceptor boats, and a helicopter demonstrated various manoeuvres at 20 nautical miles off the NMP.
The Coast Guards showcased their expertise in conducting search and rescue missions at the Day at Sea event. They conducted a practical demonstration illustrating the techniques of rescuing individuals who fell overboard and performing emergency medical evacuations. Through a display of surveillance exercises involving ships, interceptors, and a helicopter, they explained their methods of effectively monitoring and preventing unlawful activities at sea. A demonstration was also made on firing using an LMG. Further, Coast Guard members showcased the functionality of a life raft, which can accommodate and sustain up to 20 individuals during emergency situations.
Explaining the manoeuvres, Coast Guard Commandant KV Bonymon said that the demonstrations were carried out under the guidance of DIG Praveen Kumar Mishra, District Commander (Karnataka). A Chetak helicopter, two offshore patrol vessels (OPV), three fast patrol vehicles (FPV), and two interceptor boats with a speed of 45 nautical miles were involved in the manoeuvres.
Speaker UT Khader took part in the guard of honour offered to the governor by the Coast Guard Headquarters before the sailing. Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP and Mangaluru city police commissioner Anupam Agrawal, IGP Western Range Amit Singh and others were present.
