Nagpur: As predicted by the regional met department, the Southwest
monsoon advanced into some parts of Vidarbha on Friday.
According to a press release by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nagpur, the conditions are becoming favourable for the further advancement of Southwest monsoon into more parts of the region in the next 48-72 hours.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places between June 25-27 accompanied by thunderstorm, the release added.
On Friday too, some parts of the region received pre-monsoon rainfall, with Nagpur recording the highest at 61.4 millimetres. It led to a significant decline in the mercury levels, with the city recording a maximum temperature of 20 degree Celsius. This was less than six degrees below the normal temperature.
At 27.6 degree Celisus,
Gondia recorded the lowest maximum temperature in Vidarbha on Friday. All the districts saw a fall in the maximum mercury levels.
As reported by TOI, the Southwest monsoon got delayed in the region due to multiple factors, including the initial delay in
Kerala and the impact of cyclone Biparjoy on the monsoon current.
Met officials, however, informed that such delays occurred earlier too. In 2005 and 2006, the onset of monsoon in Vidarbha took place on June 24 while in 2009, the monsoon arrived on June 26.
While the normal onset date was June 10 for the region till 2019, it changed to June 15 post that. Last year, monsoon hit Vidarbha on June 16.
