NAVI MUMBAI: The inspector general of police (Konkan range), Sanjay Darade, and Harmony Foundation celebrated the 76th Republic Day with rescued homeless people at the New Panvel shelter of Social and Evangelical Association for Love (SEAL).
The IPS officer, Darade, was the chief guest at SEAL Ashram, where the flag hoisting ceremony took place on Sunday. Harmony Foundation also extended their heartfelt gratitude to the Navi Mumbai Commissioner of Police, Milind Barambe, for his unflinching support of SEAL Ashram.
Since its inception in 1999, SEAL Ashram was devoted to rescuing destitute individuals and vulnerable children from the streets and railway platforms of Mumbai and its suburbs. "Harmony Foundation salutes SEAL Ashram for its remarkable humanitarian efforts, which embody the foundational ideals enshrined in the Constitution of India. SEAL Ashram was also felicitated with Harmony Foundation’s prestigious Mother Teresa Memorial Awards for Social Justice in 2023," said Dr Abraham Mathai, who is also the former Vice Chairperson of the State Minorities Commission.
Over the years, SEAL Ashram successfully reunited around 578 people with their loved ones. The mission of SEAL Ashram resonates with the vision of India’s constitutional framers, striving to build a just and equitable society free from social injustice, discrimination, and poverty, added Dr Mathai, who is also the chief patron of SEAL. Harmony Foundation takes immense pride in standing united with SEAL Ashram and its residents to celebrate this joyous occasion.
"Together, we honour the profound impact of their work, the lives they continue to transform, and the lasting difference they make in society," said Mathai.
The other dignitaries were Senior Police Inspector of Panvel Taluka, Gajanan Gadge, API Sachin Pawar, API Anand Kamble, and other police officials. The children from Vangani tribal wadi (hamlet) and inmates of SEAL Ashram together celebrated R-Day.
The founder of SEAL, Pastor K M Philip, added: "Most of these destitutes are mentally unstable, and so get lost in the cities. Many often die of diseases on the streets, with no one to care for them, or even know who they are." Philip added: "We thank the IPS officer, Darade, for interacting with our shelter inmates and encouraging them to do well in life."
