Pvt hosp uses new tech to save brain stroke victim
Ranchi: A three-member team of a private hospital successfully conducted a surgery on an 82-year-old-woman, who suffered a brain stroke, through mechanical thrombectomy. Dr Sai Sudarshan, the neurosurgeon of the Orchid Medical Centre, claimed that it was the first mechanical thrombectomy procedure carried out successfully in the city and all of Jharkhand.

Unlike open thrombectomy, which is conducted using a balloon like catheter to pull the clot out, mechanical thrombectomy involves insertion of special endovascular devices supported by imagery to break, dissolve or suck out the clot through a catheter like vacuum. The patient, a former principal of the Netarhat School, arrived at the hospital’s emergency ward on May 5 with right body paralysis and loss of speech. Scans showed a blockage in her major artery which supplied blood to the left side of her brain.
“After the mechanical thrombectomy, the patient could move her right hand and leg. She started walking with assistance and speaking with an impediment. She was discharged on May 16,” Dr Sudarshan added.
