Surat: Five people were killed and 46 others were injured when a private bus carrying pilgrims from Madhya Pradesh fell into a deep gorge near Saputara in the Dang district early on Sunday morning. Of the 46 injured, 24 seriously injured were rushed to Surat Civil Hospital, while the remaining 22 were discharged after treatment at local hospitals.
Those who died were identified as Guddibai Yadav (60), Kamleshbai Yadav (60), Bholaram Yadav (55), Bijendra Singh Yadav (55), and Ratanlal Jatav (41). Jatav was driving the bus. The bus had a total of 51 people on board, including the driver. Jatav hailed from Vidisha district, while the other four deceased were from Shivpuri district.
On Sunday evening, Gujarat minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi visited Surat Civil Hospital and met the injured.
The bus was part of four buses carrying around 200 pilgrims from Shivpuri, Guna, Vidisha, and other neighbouring districts of Madhya Pradesh. The passengers were on a pilgrimage and were heading to Dwarka after visiting Trimbakeshwar in Nashik district of Maharashtra on Saturday. The pilgrims had set out on Dec 23, 2024, for a religious trip across various states.
The accident took place around 4.30am when the driver lost control of the vehicle near Malegaon Forest Rest House, about 3km from Saputara hill station. The bus broke the crash barrier and plunged 35 feet down into the gorge.
