Idols, valuables stolen from two temples in Vesu
Surat: Four thieves struck at two temples after breaking the locks on their doors in the Vesu area of the city on Friday morning.
The accused broke into a Jain temple situated within the housing society premises near Suda Bhavan. Before this, they stole valuables worth Rs 46,000 from Ashapura temple in Vesu village.
Vesu police and crime branch police teams launched a manhunt.
According to a complaint filed by Bharat Vora, a resident of Samprati Palace Society, the thieves entered the Jain temple inside their society premises early on Friday morning. They went to the pathshala inside the temple and stole two precious panchdhatu idols of Shantinath Bhagwan and Arnath Bhagwan.
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone 4) Vijaysingh Gurjar told TOI: "We have secured CCTV footage of various buildings and premises in which the thieves are seen. We found shoes with cement on them. We have focused the probe on various construction sites. We are also looking for them at other places."
According to sources, the four thieves had entered the a colony nearby and waited until the late hours. They then entered the society premises from a construction site adjacent to it.
The society had three security guards but they could not prevent the theft as they were at the entry gate. The accused entered from the back of the society.
Police sources said this is the second theft at the Ashapura temple as thieves had also targeted it 10 months ago. Police are ascertaining if the same thieves targeted the two temples this time.
