A cattle thief and his accomplice were arrested after a police encounter in Bhadohi late on Saturday night.
Bhadohi SP Abhimanyu Manglik said on Sunday that massive checking are being carried out across the district as part of the Maha Kumbh crowd regulation exercises.
During one such checking drive, the Unjh police noticed two suspects near Basahi culvert and asked them to stop. On seeing the police, they tried to escape after opening fire on the police team. In retaliatory firing by police, one of the suspects, Zibrail, suffered a bullet injury in leg and was caught. His accomplice was also arrested after a chase. The injured miscreant was taken to hospital.
Police have recovered two country-made firearms and live cartridges from them.
Zibrail is a history-sheeter from Gopiganj police station and was wanted in several cases, said the SP adding he had a cash reward of Rs 25,000 on him. tnn
